I had an occasion to visit Rushford yesterday. This is my home town that was devastated by flooding that hit SE Minnesota on August 19. It was heartbreaking just driving through town. Hard to describe, too. So many people lost everything they own. Some houses are salvageable but will have to be stripped down to the stud walls and rebuilt from there. Others are a total loss and will be torn down. Downtown businesses are struggling to get up and running again, too. Some never will.
Homes that weren't flooded still are without usable running water, but electricity and phone service have been restored. There is a staggering amount of work to be done.
On the bright side, school opened for the year yesterday, right on time. Life goes on. People cope. Amazing.
